Siyamthanda Botha, known by her stage name “Balcalis,” has emerged as a prominent figure in the local rap scene. Born and raised on Zwelitsha Drive in Nyanga East, Botha’s journey into music has been nothing short of remarkable. Inspired by rap legends such as Eminem and ProVerb, and later influenced by Cardi B’s style and confidence, Botha found her voice in the vibrant township of Khayelitsha, Makhaza.The culture, resilience, and community spirit of Khayelitsha have profoundly shaped Balcalis’ music and identity. Her lyrics reflect the everyday struggles and triumphs of her people, aiming to tell their stories through her art.Balcalis’ career has been significantly influenced by her community, friends, and family. As a member of a local rap group during her high school years, she performed at various events and community gatherings. This experience solidified her passion for music and encouraged her to pursue it seriously. Her friends have been her biggest supporters, providing feedback and pushing her to improve.Looking ahead, Balcalis plans to release several projects over the next five years, collaborate with both local and international artists, and perform at festivals and concerts. She is also dedicated to giving back to her community by establishing a music workshop for underprivileged youth.
