50 years of Hip Hop: Busta Rhymes

Born Trevor Tahiem Smith Jr in New York City, Busta Rhymes has shown that he is no ordinary hip hop artist. An original of the group Leaders of a New School (1986 – 1995), Busta received his stage name from Chuck D of Public Enemy. The group was the opening act for Public Enemy during their concert tour.  Shorty after the tour ended, Leaders of a New School parted ways, thus beginning Busta Rhymes’ solo career.

Busta has made guest appearances on songs for artist including Big Daddy Kane, former high school classmate The Notorious B.I.G, Janet Jackson, Kendrick Lamar, Mary J. Blige and many more. He has appeared in movies like Strapped, Higher Learning, Shaft and recently released Another West Side Story. In addition, he has appeared in the series Cosby and Fresh Off the Boat and has done voices for The Rugrats, The Boondocks and Big City Green. He created an original works for the Def Jam Fight for NY and for the radio station on the Grand Theft Auto IV video games.

Originally called Flipmode Entertainment, Busta founded the now record label Conglomerate. The label included a production crew (The Conglomerates) that consist of Rah Digga, Spliff Star, Reek the Villain, Murda Mook, Rampage, Roc Marciano and Baby Cham. They were the original Flipmode Squad that were active from 1994-2014.

Between his many adventures, Busta has released 10 solo albums. The first being The Coming in 1996 and the last one in 2020 titled Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God. He has gotten multiple nominations and has received awards that has included BET Hip Hop and Source Award. The artist born May 20, 1972, to Jamaican parents has shown he has no plans of stopping any time soon.

Favorite Jam: Get You Some (Featuring Q-Tip and Marsha Ambrosius). I still bang Past the Courvoisier, Part II, especially the instrumental and Flava In Ya Ear remix, but Get You Some is one of those jams that makes me bop my head and say, “Yeah, what he said!
