There are a plethora of things happening to celebrate one the greatest genres ever created. Personally, I did not know that 2023 marked 50 years of Hip Hop, but I am glad I have an opportunity to be a part of the celebrations and see how others are celebrating as well. Here are some of the events but this is definitely not all of them.
Showtime Movie network has collection called Hip Hop 50 Collection including Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mics ad Men and Supreme Team. Check the listing for info.
The City of New York, the office of the mayor and the Universal Hip Hop Museum have partnered to have a 12-month celebration consisting of different activities including the Traveling Exhibit, a Hip Hop Ride for Health, Hip Hop Pride/Pride Day Parade and Hip Hop 4 Peace.
The Fotografiska New York Museum in Manhattan is celebrating with an exhibit named Hip Hop: Conscious, Unconscious that began Thursday January 26th until May 21st. There will be more than 200 images that includes Tupac Shakur, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest and DJ Kool Herc.
Vevo music video network along with a number of artists will be assisting in celebrating all of 2023. Some of the artist include A$AP Rocky, Ludacris, Havoc from Mobb Deep and Souls of Mischief.
In Nashville, TN, The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) opened their yearlong exhibition January 19th called This is Hip Hop.
Friday January 27th in Pittsburgh PA, there will be a Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District with an event called the Exploration of DJing featuring DJ Big Phill, DJ Yamez, and DJ Femi and hosted by DJ Blakk Steel.
Also, check iHeart Radio, WBLS and LL Cool J’s Rock the Bells Radio for what they may have in store.
In my opinion: Hip Hop is celebrated every day. Commercials are using Hip Hop, movies are using Hip Hop for soundtracks, and different cultures often try and imitate it. Everywhere you turn, there is Hip Hop being used. That’s a heck of a celebration. This genre is pretty much saturated into different aspects of lives all over the world. I would say that is a celebration within itself. Don’t you think?
